ENDLESS VIEWS OF THE DESERT BELOW
Standing at the cliff’s edge, we got a seemingly endless view of the desert below, with like nothing on the horizon: The Edge of the World. Added this place to our top destinations on this trip (this list actually got so long, can't call it top of something anymore). The cliffs are also called Jebel Fihrayn and are part of the Tuwaiq Escarpment, that stretches for hundreds of kilometers across the Arabian Peninsula with a real nice off-road trail to get there. Baaaammm!
Located about 90 kilometers northwest of Riyadh and with tons of confusing road descriptions to get there. Needed a bit of research but in the end we took the advise of our South Tyrolian Friend Klaus, who been there before. He also told us about the trick how to camp inside the park...
Endless gravel desert
Below the cliffs, the land extends into an endless gravel desert, known as the Nafud Desert, with sand dunes, dry riverbeds and some lost trees. Almost looks like in some places in Africa.
If you experience the thrill of driving unbeaten trails and you really felt it you’d understand for sure. If you look at these images maybe too. For us it’s always so exciting, dramatic landscapes are so satisfying.
More views, more freedom.
Wind was crazy strong, almost blew us off the path 🙂
Covered by an ancient ocean
This geological gem was formed millions of years ago when the area was covered by an ancient ocean. Over time, the waters receded, leaving behind sedimentary rock layers, which erosion later shaped into these towering cliffs. Also there were many marine fossils like corals, shells and other marine life we found embedded in the limestone.
