IN THE HIGHLANDS – PURE NATURE

Montenegro may be one of the smallest Balkan states, but it has a lot to offer – a lot of wilderness. Most of our time we spent exploring the Montenegrin highlands, out in the green with some fresh air. The Tara River Canyon is located in the Durmitor National Park in Montenegro and stretches into Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is part of the Dinaric Alps.

DURMITOR

NATIONAL PARK – IT’S A MUST!

We can't say it enough but this national park really got us and many others as well it seems. That's why it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is said that it is home to over 1,500 plant species and diverse wildlife, including brown bears, wolves, lynx, and many bird species. We were looking for the bears, but they always ran away. So no bears to see for us, but we saw many eagles and some mountain chamois. And than we climbed the (almost) highest mountain of Montengro, the Bobotov Kuk. When we read about its height we were rather disappointed – 2523 m ONLY! Well, no offense, but for Swiss hiking enthusiast this is rather a small mountain ッ.

It took us almost four hours to summit Bobotov Kuk. But “geili Berge und geili Ussicht” Stephi said (awesome mountains and view), was worth the sweat (even on the top it was 28°C).
