SUSPENDED IN THE AIR AND ONLY THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
Ok wow! This place felt like we entered a set for a movie or even a different world – we visited Meteora, a real stunning place in Greece, where ancient monasteries sit on top of towering rock pillars. Some of them dating back to the 14th century, built by monks seeking solitude and spiritual refuge. A magical place and in a surreal landscape.
There are six active monasteries today, though there were once more than 20.
Meteora, which means “suspended in the air,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989 and one of the most significant complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in the world. The rock formations themselves are remarkable, formed over millions of years through erosion. They rise dramatically from the plains of Thessaly, with steep cliffs that create a breathtaking view.
WHEN ONLY THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
UP IN THE CLOUDS
We took a moment, sat down and embraced the view, the feeling of being up high and imagined how the monks used to live back in the days.
Sunset in the rocks of Meteora.
