IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE
A crazy rock close to the village of Judah in Saudi Arabia. This time we were entering the Ad-Dahna Desert. Lots of fun driving on white sand at sunset. Of course we had to lower the tire pressure again – it has become quite an habit in Saudi.
In the middle of nowhere we found it, this huge rock, isolated, rising dramatically from the flat desert landscape: the so called Judah Thumb. Some locals also call it the Devil's Thumb. We really looked very closely, but couldn’t figure out why.
Maybe you do? Some corners actually looked quite scary as the full moon drew some other shadow shapes on it.
Blue hour: The colors were insane.
Ad-Dahna Desert
The Ad-Dahna Desert is a narrow, arcing desert that connects the Nafud Desert in the north with the Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter) in the south of Saudi Arabia. Interesting that in this area of the desert the sand is almost white and not red like in all the other parts of this desert.
Fascinating and stunning for sure and another landscape-gem in Saudi. LOVE IT!
We camped here three days and really enjoyed the solitude again (except for some visits of camels). Could have stayed longer but we ran out of water.
Reminder how harsh life in the desert can be.
Life in a desert is a constant battle of survival, shaped by extremes.
Golden Nugget
How different everything can look from above, love the change of perspective. This transformation can reveal patterns, shapes, and relationships that are otherwise hidden or less noticeable from the ground. These views actually give objects new names 🙂
